In the north of the country, January is relatively dry. Hanoi and Halong Bay receive less rainfall, with an average of 17 to 20 mm (about 0.6 to 0.8 inches) per month.

Central regions such as Hue and Da Nang receive slightly more rainfall in January. Average rainfall can range from 50 to 100 mm (about 2 to 4 inches).

The south of the country is still dry in January. Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta receive very little rainfall, averaging 10 to 20 mm (about 0.4 to 0.8 inches).

What to wear in Vietnam in January?

What to wear in Vietnam in January depends on the region you visit and the prevailing weather conditions.

In the north of the country, where temperatures can be cooler, you should opt for layered clothing. Take light jumpers, long-sleeved shirts and comfortable trousers for daytime walks. In the evening, it is advisable to wear a light jacket or coat.

In the central regions the temperature is milder, so take light clothes: T-shirts, shorts and skirts. However, also bring a few long-sleeved shirts and a light jacket in case of cooler evenings.

In the south of the country, the weather is warmer. Light and breathable clothing such as T-shirts, dresses and shorts will do. Don't forget about sun protection: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

As for footwear, comfortable shoes are required for sightseeing and travelling around the city. If you plan to visit temples or pagodas, bring shoes that are easy to put on and take off, as it is customary to remove your shoes before entering these places.

In addition, a small umbrella or mackintosh may be useful, especially if you are visiting the central regions, where it sometimes rains. A swimming costume will not be superfluous either, especially if you are travelling to southern regions with warmer weather.
